Mark Madoff, the son of infamous Ponzi schemer Bernard Madoff, was reported to have been found dead Saturday in his New York City apartment of an apparent suicide in his living room.
His death occurred on the second anniversary of his father’s arrest.
Bernard Madoff, who pleaded guilty of operating a Ponzi scheme and defrauding thousands of investors of as much as $65 billion, was sentenced to 150 years in prison this year. Prosecutors have said it was the largest investor fraud committed by a single person. Madoff is now at the Butner Federal Correction Complex, a medium-security prison in North Carolina.
Mark Madoff was a broker at his father’s firm. An investor has filed a $900 million lawsuit against him, his brother Andy and others associated with the firm. There is apparently a federal criminal investigation ongoing as well.
Mark Madoff had apparently been frustrated at his inability to get hired at another investment firm.
Mark Madoff’s Nantucket home was put on the market in June, 2010 for $7.5 million. He bought the house for $6.5 million in 2008.
